Board Development & Alumni Metrics

Florida State University

Florida State University hired Patouillet Consulting, LLC to conduct an interactive workshop: “The Role of the Alumni Association as a Strategic Partner in Advancing the University and Enriching the Lives of Students and Alumni Worldwide” and to assist the association in identifying a series of key metrics to drive the work of the alumni effort at FSU. The workshop resulted in the start of a common language about the role of alumni relations as a strategic partner in the educational enterprise at FSU and presented 10 ways alumni organizations can advance their mission.

The metrics project included interviews with 20 key university and association leaders including the University President Dr. Eric Barron, Vice President for University Advancement Dr. Tom Jennings, President and CEO of the FSU Alumni Association Mr. Scott Atwell, alumni association, athletic boosters and foundation leaders as well as other key members of the university community. The completed project included an executive summary with key metrics for consideration by alumni and institutional leadership based upon the critical feedback from the key stakeholders interviewed as well as the expertise of the lead consultant, Dr. Lee Patouillet, a 35 year veteran of advancement. The report also included quotes from key stakeholders reported anonymously, on a variety of critical questions. This approach provided additional insight into where these individuals thought the association should focus its efforts in the immediate future and identified areas for future collaboration.

Scott Atwell, President and CEO, FSU Alumni Association
“We’re all doing more with less, and it’s easy to fall into the trap of being so busy that we can’t see the forest for the trees. Patouillet Consulting came in with a fresh pair of eyes and a new set of questions that helped us realize how far off the mark we were in meeting the expectations of our university leadership. With finite resources, it’s more important than ever to concentrate our efforts on the things that matter most to our most important colleagues. They showed us how to be a valued and strategic partner for the university and our alumni.”
