Executive Biography

Roger L. Williams served as Executive Director of the Penn State Alumni Association and Associate Vice President of Alumni Relations from 2003 until his retirement in 2015. He solidified the organization’s stature as the world’s largest dues-paying alumni association, growing by 21 percent, from 146,619 to 177,307. Producing three strategic plans during his tenure, his most recent priorities, in addition to membership growth, were to: manage crisis impacts in concert with the organization’s mission; strengthen revenue streams; clarify the Alumni Association’s relationship with the University; enhance diversity at the Alumni Association and the larger University; strengthen alumni engagement; and sustain and strengthen relationships with other key constituencies.

With 37 years of higher education experience, Williams served as chief communications officer at three major research universities — Penn State, Georgetown, and Arkansas — as well as a private higher education consulting firm, winning numerous awards from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). He holds three degrees from Penn State, including the doctorate in higher education, winning the 1989 Distinguished Dissertation Award from the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE). Author of more than 30 articles and two books, he continues to serve as affiliate associate professor of higher education at Penn State.
